The history of Newport Beach is very unique. The city's first inhabitants more than a thousand years ago were the Shoshone Indians who lived along the Pacific coast in the Southern California area. The Shoshone Indians lived off the fish from the sea and the fertile land surrounding them. In the 1800's the land holdings of the Capistrano Mission were parceled out as Spanish and Mexican land grants. These land grants were given to war heroes and wealthy aristocratic families. Many years later, the prominent landowners of the area, Don Sepulveda and Don Bernardo Yorba, sold land to American entrepreneurs by the names of Flint, Bixby, Irvine and McFadden.
